Hi there! My name is Michael Sutherland, and I am a 23 year old composer, orchestrator, keyboardist, guitarist, singer, and sound designer from Florida.
I remember when I first heard music that made my heart sing. I was sitting on the floor, and my brother was playing Final Fantasy X. I heard the music and thought: “Someone wrote this?” My youth belied the value that time and hard work can bring to one’s craft, but at that moment, I embarked on a life-long journey to become a composer. In an age of synths and samples, it became my goal to utilize said technology to create music that exists on the cutting edge of modern production technique and stylings, full of passion and intent.
Today, I am an avid listener of the Film and Anime scores of Yoko Kanno, Hiroyuki Sawano, Yuki Hayashi, Yoshihisa Hirano, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Michael Giacchino, and John Barry. In terms of Video Game scores, I most enjoy those by Keiichi Okabe, Masashi Hamauzu, Koji Kondo, Yasunori Mitsuda, and Nobuo Uematsu. For non soundtrack music, I enjoy listening to David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Mos Def, MISIA, George Benson, John Coltrane, Carlos Jobim, Maurice Ravel, and countless others.
Inspired by these artists, I am someone who is very easily excited by music technology, novel sounds, and emotionally potent music. Intentionality in support of a composer’s creative vision is, in my opinion, of the utmost importance. To this end, I have, and continue to, placed particular emphasis on my personal studies as a composer, arranger, and producer, as I feel that these are the tools that grant a creative composer the ability to realize their vision. I value knowledge, creativity, and functionality because these elements are the tools which translate passion into the creative medium. While I do not take particular focus on any given genre, I feel that every project calls for a refined, unique, bespoke touch and sonic pallet from which to draw.
